***Περιγραφή - Description: 'Anti-hunger hormone to help fight against obesity'

Chewing gum containing an appetite suppressing hormone may help treat obesity reported five newspapers (15 January 2007). The articles appear to be based partly on a press release announcing funding into research to develop a synthetic form of pancreatic polypeptide which may be used to suppress appetite.

The plan to develop a chewing gum containing the hormone pancreatic polypeptide (PP), a natural appetite suppressant, in an attempt to treat obesity, was reported in five newspapers (1-5). The newspapers reported that the research is among the first to benefit from a new scheme to fund new medicines development.

The news articles appear to be based on in part on a press release issued by the Wellcome Trust (6). The press release stated that funding was being provided by the Seeding Drug Discovery initiative for research into the development of a long-acting synthetic form of PP that can mimic the body's natural ability to suppress appetite as a way of tackling obesity. The research is being led by Professor Steve Bloom of Imperial College, London. It was also stated that the proposed research may lead to a treatment within five to eight years.

The newspapers accurately reported the announcement of new funding for the use of PP as an appetite suppressant to treat obesity. Four newspapers stated that PP treatment could cut the amount people eat by between 15% and 25% (1-4). It is not possible to comment on these figures as we have been unable to identify the source of the information.
